New England went into the offseason with their 2011 duo of running backs, Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley, unsigned and free to sign with another team as unrestricted free agents. Vereen quickly cashed in with the New York Giants on a multi-year deal. His receiving skills out of the backfield should be a boon for quarterback Eli Manning in New York.
Stevan Ridley missed the last 10 games of 2014 with a knee injury and was on the market a while. Ridley eventually got a one-year, “prove-it” deal from the New York Jets and will fight for a roster spot. The Patriots’ front office seemed unconcerned about losing their two prohibitive starters at running back for the past few seasons, mainly due to their depth at the position.
